Act I

Backstage at the Comédie theatre. The actress Adriana Lecouvreur tells stage manager Michonnet that she loves Maurizio (comte de Saxa) - who unknown to her, is a pretender to the Polish throne. They meet just before she goes on stage, when she gives him a bouquet of violets. Later on, a note to Maurizio, requesting a meeting, is intercepted by the prince de Boullon, who assumes that it is from Maurizio´s mistress, the actress Duclos, while it is in fact from the princess de Bouillon.

Act II

The princess de Bouillon awaits the arrival of Maurizio. When he arrives she demands to know if he is seeing another woman. He says not, and calms her down by giving the violets given to him by Adriana. As the guests arrive for a party thrown by the princess´s husband, she hides in an adjoinin room until she is helped to escape by Maurizio and, unwittingly, Adrian. While neither says anything, both women suspect the other of being their rival.

Act III

At the princess´s party. Adriana´s voice is recognized by the princess as that of the woman who, with Maurizio, helped her to freedom: vengefully, she shows Adriana the now fading bouquet of violets and, in return, Adrian quotes a verse from Racine, hinting at the princess´s immorality. For this, the princess swears revenge.

Act IV

At the Comédie, the company are celebrating Adriana´s birthday. One of her gifts is an anonymous delivery of violets. She assumes that that they are from Maurizio and breathes deeply from their scent. However, they are from the princess, who has soaked them in poison. Maurizio arrives to find her dying.
