Outside a hut, Amahl, a twelve-year-old with a crippled leg, is playing his pipe. The three Kings pass by and decide to stop at Amahl´s house. When Amahl tells his mother, she rebukes him for lying. The Kings tell the woman that they are looking for a child and describe their vision. In the morning Amahl´s mother, seeing the Kings´ wealth, tries to steal some gold but the King´page stops her. Woken by the noise, Amahl fights the page. Melchior - one of the Kings - restores order and tells Amahl´s mother that she can keep the gold as the Child has no need of it. Moved by his description of the Child, the mother offers the gold back, saying that if she owned anything, she would give it. Amahl dances about the room and each of the Kings asks to touch him. Amahl asks them if he can go with them to see the Child. They agree, as does his mother, and the opera ends with Amahl playing the pipe tune with which the opera began.
