Act I

Ginevra, daughter of the king of Scotland, pursues her love for the noble Ariodante and rejects the advances of Polinesso, duke of Albany. To achieve his ends, Polinesso decides to exploit the love of Ginevra´s lady-in-waiting, Dalinda. After Ginevra and Ariodante have pledges their love, and the king has promised Ariodante both his daughter and the throne, Polinesso puts his scheme into action. He tells Dalinda he has renounced Ginevra, and that if she imitates and dresses like her mistress, and admits him into Ginevra´s chamber, his heart will be hers. She succumbs out of love for him, rejecting the devotion of Licanio, Aridante´s brother. The court celebrates the impending wedding with a masque.

Act II

On a moonlit night, near Ginevra´s apartments Polinesso taunts Ariodante with the prospects of his supposed assignation with Ginevra, before being admitted to the chamber by the disguised Dalinda. Ariodante is only restrained from suicide by Lurcanio, who recommends ´vengeance as the best solution. Ariodante goes off in despair. Dalinda emerges to express her love for Polinesso, and he gloats over the success of his deceit. At a council to confirm his successors, the king is informed that Ariodante has drowned himself. Ginevra faints, reviving only to be held responsible by Licianio for his brother´s death. The king denounces his daughter and Ginevra is driven to near insanity. Act II ends with a balletic representation of her delirious dreams.

Act III

Ariodante has survived to rescue Dalinda from Polinesso´s assassins. She reveals the deceit to Ariodante who sets off with her to the court. Polinesso takes the opportunity to stand as Ginevra´s champion against Lurcanio. Lucianio deals a mortal blow to Polinesso, who is carried away. A second, visoredm knight appears to defend Ginebra, and everyone is astonished when he reveals himself as Ariodante. Polinesso has confessed his deception, the pardoned Dalinda is now free to accept Lurcanio, and Ginevra is released from confinement to be reunited with Ariodante.
