Attila and his hordes are destroying the Italian city of Aquileia. Odabella, leader of the enemy women, impresses the Hun with her courage and he accepts her into his entourage.. Ezio, emissary of the Roman emperor, proposes to Attila that the Huns be ceded all the world except Italy, which Ezio would retain for himself; Attila rejects him, and Ezio declares the defiance of Rome. In the meantime, Foresto, Odabella´s lover, arrives in Rio-Alto and urges his fellow refugees from Aquileia to stand their ground and build a new city.
Odabella and Foresto meet, and he accuses her of betraying their people. She claims she is awaiting her moment to kill Attila. Attila has a dream in which an old man warns him not to continue towards Rome; on waking, he is confronted by a procession headed by an old man who repeats the words he had heard in his dream.
Foresto and Ezio plot to overthrow the Huns. At a banquet, to which Ezio has been invited, Odabella saves Attila from death by poison. For this, he declares that she will be his bride.
Attila and Odabella are about to be married but during the ceremony the Romans surround the Huns´camp; as they attack, Odabella buries a knife in Attila´s chest.
