Act I

Passing himself off as a poor student called Lindoro, Count Almaviva is trying to seduce Rosina, the ward of the aged Doctor bartolo, who would like to marry her himself. Figaro, the count´s barber and factotum, offers to help. Inside Bartolo´s house, Rosina writes a letter to Lindoro. News is brought by the music master Don Basilio that Count Almaviva is in town looking for Rosina. Basilio suggests a campaign of misinformation against the count, and Bartolo asks for the marriage contract between himself and Rosina to be drawn up immediately. Disguising himself as a drunken soldier with an official order demanding lodging. Almaviva gains access to Bartolo´s house, where he whispers to Rosina that he is really Lindoro. Bartolo and Don Basilio attempt to make him leave, but he refuses to budge and slips Rosina a letter, which she exchanges for a laundry list. The scene gets rowdy, soldiers arrive to find out what is happening, the count finally leaves, and the act ends in confusion.

Act II

The count returns to the house, this time disguised as the music teacher Don Alonso, who has been called in to replace the unwell Don Basilio. He soon gains the trust of bartolo and, with his blessing gives Rosina her lesson. While shaving Bartolo, Figaro steals a key that will enable the count and Rosina to elope. Basilio makes an unexpected return but Almaviva bribes him into playing along with the plot. Even so, Bartolo is suspicious snd tries to rush the marriage by sending Basilio to find a notary. Bartolo manages tp persuade Rosina that Lindoro has been working for Almaviva, and that he does not really love her. So upset is Rosina that she confesses he rplan to elope with the student that vey night, but all is saved when Lindoro returns, reveals his true identity and proclaims his love. Things get worse when Basilio returns with the notary, but after more bribery he agrees to witness Rosina´s marriage to the count. Bartolo, returning to find Rosina married, is initially furious but soon calms down when he realizes he will not have to pay a dowry.
