Act I

At an eighteenth-century Paris salon, the widowed Countess Madelene listens to a sextet, composed for her birthday by the composer Flamand. The poet Olivier has written a play, which La Roche is to direct. A debate arises as to which is more important - words or music - and both composer and poet look to the countess to decide the issue. Both secretely declaire their love to the countess. She agrees to meet Flamand at eleven the following morning, in the library. La Roche brings on a ballerina and then two Italian singers, whose love duet is praised for its music, but the words of which are derided as meaningless. The arguments continue until it is decided that composer and poet should collaborate on an opera. Various subjects (including Ariadne) are prposed before the countess suggests a contemporary drama - about themselves. This is agreed and the theatre companies leave for Paris. The countess is eventually left alone. She receives a message from Olivier, who wants to know how the opera will end, and will meet her in the library at eleven the following morning. The countess ponders the respective qualities of words and music, wondering whom she loves more - Flamand or Olivier. She cannot decide and leaves for supper, humming.
