Act One

Easter morning in a Sicilian village. Turidd“`u has been away with the army. Before leaving he had an affair with Lola, who has now married Alfio. Turiddł is upset by this, but has found consolation through a brief affair with Santuzza, whom he has made pregnant. For this, she has been excommunicated. As the curtain rises Turiddł sings of Lola. Alfio meets Turiddł“s mother Lucia and asks her where her son is. She replies that he has gone to fetch wine for the family inn; but when Alfio tells her that he has seen him near his house, Santuzza quickly tells Lucia to say nothing of Turiddł“s interest in Lola. After the villagers enter the church for the Easter service Santuzza tells Lucia how her son made her pregnant and then abandoned her. Lucia enters the church, leaving Santuzza to face Turiddł. They meet, and she begs him to honour his obligation, but he is distracted by Lola`s arrival. When Lola enters the church, Santuzza implores Turiddł to return her love; he throws her to the ground and follows Lola into the church, leaving Santuzza to thoughts of revenge. She tells Alfio that Turiddł has been unfaithful with Lola, driving Alfio into a rage. After the service Turiddł encourages the villagers to drink his mother“s wine. He offers a glass to Alfio - who refuses to drink - and when it becomes clear that a fight is imminent the women leave. Alfio challenges Turiddł to a duel. Turiddł goes to his mother, whom he asks to look after Santuzza should he die. He leaves to face Alfio; they fight offstage, then a female voice is heard screaming that Turiddł has been killed.
