Act 1

Paul is in mourning for his dead wife, Marie. He rarely leaves their house and preserves her room as if she were still alive. A close friend, Frank, persuades him to leave the house for a few hours and, while walking, he meets Marietta. He is struck by her resemblance to Marie and invites her back to his home. Paul and Marietta dance and he places Marie´s shawl across her shoulders ang begins to believe that his wife has returned. Marietta sees Marie´s portrait and realizes what is happening. She mocks the increasingly desperate Paul, who is torn by his feelings for her. In a vision Marie implores him to "see and understand".

Act II

The entire act, which is dominated by Marietta, unfolds in Paul´s imagination. He sees her being seduced by Frank, rising from the dead and exorcizing the ghost of her rival, Marie.

Act III

The nightmare continues into the final act in which Marietta desecrates Marie´s possessions, driving Paul to strangle her with a length of his wife´s hair. When he awakes, the plait is in his hands, but Marietta is nowhere to be seen. He understands Marie´s riddle and, changing out of his black suit, he leaves the city.
