Act I

Aschenbach, a widiwed novelist, believes his life as a writer is over. He enters a Munich churchyard where he hears a traveller sing of far-off lands and decides to take a holiday in the sun. Leaving on a boat for Venice he becomes aware of a group of youths leaning over the deck and shouting to the girls on shore. They are joined by a made-up old fop who encourages them in the popular song "Serenissima". Aschenbach is disgusted at the sight of him and goes inside. In Venice, while travelling by gondola, he passes a boatload of boys and girls also singing "Serenissima". At dinner in his hotel, he is captivated by the beauty of a young Polish boy called Tadzio; later on the beach of the Lido, he watches Tadzio play. Back att the hotel, he decides to leave but is forced to stay when his luggage is sent to the wrong destination. The manager has kept his room, and tells Aschenbach that the wind is now blowing some of the heat away. Aschenbach sees Tadzio on the beach once more; he cannot bring himself to approach him and winces when Tadzio walks past and smiles. Left alone, Aschenbach exclaims "I love you".

Act II

At the hotel barber´s, Aschenbach is told of a disease passing through Venice. Again he stumbles across Tadzio with his family and follows them into St Mark´s. Learning that the disease is cholera, he feels the need to warn Tadzio´s mother but is unable to speak. While sleeping in his room, Aschenbach dreams of Apollo and Dionysus. He returns to the beach where Tadzio and his friend are playing. Later, Aschenbach visits the barber and gets him to dye his hair and paint his face. Feeling invigorated, he takes a gondola and follows Tadzio´s family through the canal system. Losing them, he returns for the last time to the beach, where Tadzio loses a fight with one of his friends. Rising from his chair, Aschenbach cries out and Tadzio beckons, but Aschenbach falls back in his chair and dies.
