Don Pasquale, a wealthy old bachelor, is determined to disinherit his rebellious nephew Ernesto, who has fallen in love with the widow Norina. He asks Dr Malatesta to help him find a wife so that he can leave his fortune to his own children. Malatesta, a friend to both nephew and uncle, agrees to help Pasquale marry "Sofronia", supposedly Maltesta´s sister, but in fact Norina in disguise.
Sofronia is presented to Pasquale; he is smitten by the veiled lady, whose only hobby is sewing. A wedding contract is drawn up in which the Don leaves half of his wordly goods to his bride. As the ink is frying on the page, Sofronia reveals her tru nature and begins to make her husband´s life a misery, demanding every extravagance his money can buy.
Their relationship continues to disintegrate. Don Pasquale discovers that his wife has an assignation with a stranger, and prepares to catch the adulterers red-handed. Sofronia and Ernesto are surprised by the Don and Malatesta: although Pasquale is angry having been made to look a fool,he is so delighted to be free of Sofronia that he readily agrees to bless his nephew´s marriage.
