Nemorino, who is in love with Adina, entertains himself and his farmworkers by telling them the tale of Tristan and Isolde and the love potion. Sergeant Belcore gives flowers to Adina, who then upsets the sensitive Nemorino, firstly by showing Belcore too much affection and then by revealing that she could never love him. Nemorino remembering Isolde´s story, buys a potion from the quack Doctor Dulcamara, who claims it will work within only 24 hours. Buoyed by the wine (for that is the potion´s prime ingredient), Nemorino grows in confidence, but this is shattered when he hears Adina agree to marry Belcore.
The wedding is postponed when Nemorino fails to attend. Penniless but desperate to buy more elixir, Nemorino enlists in Belcore´s regiment. After taking more of the potion he is mobbed by the local village girls, who have heard of his inheritrance, and so he assumes that the potion is working. Adina is shocked at this evident attractions but, after being told about the potion by Dulcamara, she claims that her own charms are more than a match for his trickery, Soon, however, Adina realizes that she loved nemorino all alongand, after buying back his commission, she confesses her feelings. The village celebrates as Dulcamara leaves, convinced that his potion works.
