Time and place: In the Aragon mountains, in don Ruy de Silvas castle,in Charlemagnes tomb in Aachen and in Saragossa 1519.
Don Juan de Aragon has been outlawed and is now living as a bandit in the mountains of Aragon. He and Don Carlo,king of Spain, have been rivals ever since Don Carlo killed his father, but they share a passion for Elvira - who is soon to be married, against her will, to the aged Don Ruy Gomez de Silva. Elvira secretely loves Ernani, and during one of their secret assignations they are interrupted by Don Carlo, who challenges Ernani to a duel. Elvira breaks it up just as Silva marches in.When he realizes that one his fiabceés suitors is the king, Silvas anger gives way to fawning respect and they discuss politics, while Ernani and Elvira plan their elopement.
It is the morning of Elvira´s wedding day. Ernani breaks into Silva´s castle and the lovers reaffirm their devotion. As they embrace, Sila bursts in, just as the king arrives in pursuit of Ernani. According to the rules of hospitality Silva cannot surrender his captive. When Don Carlo´s men find nothing, he takes Elvira hostage and leaves. Silva then hands Ernani a sword and demand satisfaction. Ernani refuses to raise his sword against the old man. Silva agrees to let Ernani help him free Elvira, but with one fateful condition: when everything is resolved Ernani must allow himself to be killed. The old man will blow a horn when the time comes.
In the vault containing Charlemagne´s tomb, Ernani, Silva and a group of conspirators assemble as the new Holy Roman emperor is about to be named. Carlo waits in the shadows and listens as Ernani refuses the "honour" of killing the king - even when he is offered his own life in return. As Carlo´s election as Holy Roman emperor is confirmed he sends his soldiers into the tomb and the conspirators are arrested. Elvira persuades the new emperor to show the clemency of Charlemagne, and Ernani and his fellow conspirators are freed.
At the wedding of Ernani and Elvira a strange horn call is heard by the guests. It is Silva, come to demand Ernani´s death. As Elvira looks on, Ernani draws a dagger and stabs himself.
