Time and place: At the countryside and in S:t Petersburg during 1820-twenties.

Act 1

The sisters Tatiana and Olga sing a song which revives old memories in their widowed mother Larina; she recalls the time before she was married. Lensky, the fiancé of Olga, arrives together with his new neighbour Onegin. Tatiana, who unlike her merry sister is very shy and reserved, feels strongly drawn to the stranger.

Tatiana, unable til restrain her feelings, decides to write to Onegin. She sits up all night and opens her heart to him in a letter, which she gets her nurse Filipjevna to deliver in the morning.

The next day Onegin, to Tatiana´s despair, tells her that he is not suited to marriage.

Act 11

Some months later, Onegin, has been persuaded by Lensky to accept an invitation to a ball at Larina´s on the occasion of Tatiana´s name-day. The festivities bore him, and mainly to amuse himself he flirts with Olga. Lensky is jealous and the quarrel between them ends in a challenge to a duel. Although they were formerly friends a reconciliation is impossible, and in the duel Onegin kills Lensky.

After leading a wandering life for several years Onegin returns to S:t Petersburg and is invited to a ball at the house of his friend Prince Gremin. The latter is happily married - to Tatiana. Onegin now falls violently in love with Tatiana.

He writes to her in glowing terms, aware of his mistake years ago, and calls upon her in Gremin´s palace. But although Tatiana´s love has not yet died, she rejects him in favour of her husband.
