California, 1850. At the Polka Saloon, a group of gold miners are playing cards. It is revealed that the bandit Ramerrez is on the loose and that a $5000 reward is on offer for his capture. The local sheriff Jack Rance, makes advances to the barīs owner,Minnie, but she rejects him, explaining she will settle only for true love. At this point a stranger, Dick Johnson, arrives. Minnie remembers that they met long ago, and she falls in love with him - not realizing that he is the bandit Ramerrez.Although it was he plan to raid the minerīs gold, his feelings for Minnie (who guards the gold) hold him back.
Johnson and Minnie get together in Minnieīs rooms but Rance then arrives and produces a photo of Johnson, warning her that he is none other than the bandit Ramerrez. When Rance leaves, Johnson tries to explain how he came to be a bandit, but his tales cuts no ice with Minnie, who demands that he leave. Shortly after, gunfire is heard: Ramerrez has been shot. Minnie drags him to safety in her loft, but Rance forces him to descend, whereupon Johson collapses. Desperate, Minnie turns to Rance and suggests a game of cards to decide the banditīs fate - the stake, Johnsonī+s life. Minnie cheats and wins, forcing Rance to abndon his prey.
In a nearby forest, Rance and his men are told that Ramerrez has been captured. The minerīs drag in Johnson and prepare to hang him; in a moving speech, he asks them to tell Minnie that he escaped to freedom. However, Minnie arrives just in time and, holding the minerīs back with a pistol, she begs her friends to spare his lifr. Their love for Minnie compels them to free the bandit, and Ramerrez and Minnie ride off to start a new life together.
