A Neapolitan gypsy camp, 1850. Having fled Turkey, Zaioda is in mourning for her fiancé, Selim, whom she has left behind. The playright Prosdocimo enters the camp in search of material for a new drama and is followed by Geronio, who is looking for a fortune-teller to advise him on how best to cure his wife, Fiorilla, of her flightiness. At the port Selim disembarks and almost immediately begins to flirt with Fiorilla, which angers her latest lover,Narciso. Selim prepares his ship for departure (with the intention of taking Fiorilla), but Zaida arrives and achieves a reconciliation with him. Then Narciso, Fiorillla and Geronio turn up, complicating the situation.
Geronio is approached by Selim, who suggests that he buy Fiorilla from him. Zaida and Fiorillla then invite Selim to choose between them, but Zaida reoils, regretting having invited such a cattle market. Prosdocimo tells Geronio that the Turk intends tto abduct his wife during the evening´s masked ball. Zaida and Narciso sow confusion at the ball by dressiin exactly like Fiorilla and Selim; when the dust settles, Selim and Zaida leave Italy together and Geronio and Fiorilla are reunited. Prosdocimo has the material he wanted.
