Mustafá, the bey of Algiers, wants his wife Elvira to marry an Italian slave, Lindoro, so that he may take an Italian wife. Coincidentally, an Italian ship is reported wrecked off the coast. Two of its passengers, Isabella and her suitor Taddeo (whom she presents as her uncle), are taken prisoner. Isabella is looking for her lover - Lindoro. Mustafà asks Lindoro to accompany Elvira to Venice - which he accept as a chance to escape - leaving the bey free to entertain Isabella. She charms Mustafà and persuades him to give her Lindora as a slave.
Isabella and Lindoro plan their escape. Lindoro tells the bey that Isabella wants to make the bey her "Pappatacci" - the title given to men who allow their women absolute freedom. Isabella prepares the ceremony, and makes the bey swear to remain "deaf and blind" to all her enterprises. Lindora and Isabella are accompanying by the other Italian captives to their waiting ship, which the bey has been duped into thinking is part of the ceremony. Taddeo is left behind and realizes that they have been tricked, whereupon he alerts Mustafà; the bey, wishing to remain true to "Pappatacci", at first does nothing, but finally wakes to the deception, renounces Italian women and begs his wife for forgiveness.
