Act I

In Vienna, during the reign of the empress Maria Theresa, the wife of the field marshal Werdenberg (known as the marschallin), has spent the night with her seventeen-year-old lover Count Octavian. Voices alert the young man, who disguises himself as "Mariandel", a maid, just as Werdenberg´s cousin, baron Ochs, arrives. He boorishly asks the Marschallin to choose a Knight of the Rose to present the silver rose to his fiancée, Sophie von Faninal. Octavian decides it is time to leave but he catches the eye of the lascivious Ochs, who decides that "Mariandel" is prettier than Sophie. Back in his own clothes, Octavian is worried by the Marschallin´s conviction that, at 32, she is growing too old and that their relationship will never last. After a formal parting, she sends the rose after him.

Act II

In the von Faninal family home, Sophie and her duenna Marianne await the presentation of the silver rose. But the moment Sophie and ctavian lay eyes on each other, they fall in love. Ochs barges in, outraging Octavian with his rudeness; the younger man demands satisfaction for the insult. During their duel, Ochs is slightly wounded, and in the ensuing commotion Sophie´s father threatens to make her enter a convent if she does not marry Ochs. Octavian is desperate to win her for himself and tricks Ochs into a rendezvous with "Mariandel".

Act III

"Mariandel" and Ochs meet at an inn, where Octavian has prepared all sorts of traps to scare Ochs. He even arranges for the arrival of a mystery woman who claims to be his wife and the mother of the children sha has with her. Ochs calls the police and general tumult ensues as the law, servants, the Faninal family and the Marschallin all arrive. The Marschallin clears the inn and, bringing Octavian and Sophie together, she leaves them to their love.
