Act I

The farmer Fabrizio Vingradito would like his son Giannetto to marry their servant girl Ninnetta, daughter of the famous soldier Fernando Villabella. Fortunately, the two are already in love. However, Giannetto“s mother Lucia is opposed to any wedding, as she thinks Ninetta irresponsible. Ninetta is joined by a dishevelled, ragged man who turns out to be her father; he is on the run, having been imprisoned for trying to visit Ninetta against company orders. He gives ninetta a silver fork and spoon to sell. Gottardo, the mayor, arrives and attempts to seduce Ninetta, but he is interrupted by an urgent message which, as he is without his spectacles, he asks Ninetta to read aloud. It is an order to arrest her father, and so she changes the description of the fugitive. Meanwhile, a silver spoon has been stolen; Lucia accuses Ninetta of theft, and the girl is arrested for the crime.( Unknown to all, the family“s pet magpie is the real thief.)

Act II

Ninetta is visited in prison by Giannetto and later by the mayor, who offers her freedom in return for her love. At her trial, she is sentenced to death and Fernando“s late arrival in court serves only to bring about his own arrest. As she is marched towards her execution, the magpie“s nest - and the stolen cutlery - are discovered atop the belltower but, as gunfire is heard in the distance, all seems lost. A joyful crowd proclaims Ninetta“s safety and, as Fernado receives a royal pardon, all except the mayor rejoice.
