Act I

The men of the castle de Fourmoutiers have gone on Crusade, leving their women behind. The young and rakish Count Ory has his eye on the countess Adèle - who is depressed at the absence of her brother - and disguise himself as a hermit, gifted with a knowledge of the ways of the heart. His friend Rimbaud generates interest in his talents and soon enough the count´s page Isolier approaches and asks how he might win the love of the countess Adèle. Isolier announces a plan whereby he intends to sneak into the castle as a nun. Ory is impressed and determines to do exactly the same. The countess´s companion Ragonde advises her to seek the hermit´s counsel. Adèle arrives and Ory advises her to fall in love, but when she hints at an affection for Isilier he warns her off anyone associated with thwe notorious Count Ory. When the hermit is suddenly unmasked, Ory has to conjure another scheme - quickly, as it is announced that the Crusaders are on their way home.

Akt II

The women await the return of their husbands - glad that they have foiled Ory´s plans; but they are disturbed by cries from below. It is a group of nuns (Ory and his friends in disguise) who claim they are being harassed by the licentious count. Adèle lets them in and Sioster Colette (Ory) thanks her profusely. Left to themselves, the nuns find the wine cellars, but Isolier manages to warn Adèle that Ory may well be in the building. Eventually, Adèle tricks the count into making a fool of himself by embracing Isolier. Trumpets sound the return of the Crusaders, and the count and his men are forced to beat a hasty retreat.
