Scotland, late sixteenth century. Lord Henry (Enrico) Ashton is determined that his sister, Lucy (Lucia), should marry Arthur (Arturo) Bucklaw, as their alliance would strengthen his political situation. But she loves Sir Edgar (Edgardo) Ravenswood - family´s greatest enemy. Edgardo wants to ask for her hand in marriage but Lucia is frightened of her brother´s temper. Edgardo further complicates matters by telling Lucia that he has to travel to France on political business. They exchange rings.
Enrico forges a letter from Edgardo in order to prove his infidelity, and begs Lucia to agree to marry Arturo (his political difficulties having worsened).Devastated by the letter´s contents and weakened by her responsibilities to her family, Lucia agrees. As the ceremony is about to begin Edgardo returns to claim Lucia - but she has signed the wedding contract.
Enrico challenges Edgardo to a duel. The wedding celebration are shattered by news that Lucia has murdered Arturo. Dranged, Lucia appears carrying a blood-spattered knife and, hallucinating that she is about to marry Edgardo, she falls down dead. Edgardo awaits Enrico, but when he hears of Lucia´s death he stabs himself.
