Act I

Des Grieux, a young cavalier, sits with friends in a inn. He mocks the vagaries of love and celebrates his life of selfish pleasure; but when manon Lescaut arrives (on her way to a convent, accompsnied by jer brother) he falls immediately in love with her. One of Manon´s travelling companions, Géronte, tells Lescaut of his interest in his sister, and Lescaut blesses his plan to take her as his wife to Paris. Both are fooled when des Grieux manages to convince Manon to elope with him. They steal Géronte´s carriage.

Act II

Manon has left des Grieux for Géronte, tempted by his wealth. Des Grieux finds Gérontes house,where he and Manon rekindle their love,but they are discovered by Géronte, who is sent packing by Manon. As des Grieux and Manon prepare to leave, her brother arrives and warns them that Géronte has summoned the police; Manon tries to take Géronte´s jewels with her, but the police burst in and arrest her for stealing.

Act III

Manon is to be deported rom Le havre. Des Grieux and Lescaut are waiting for sunrise, at which point they will rescue her. When their plan fails, des Grieux hurls himself at the feet of the captain and begs to be allowed to accompany her. As the order for departure is given, he steps on board.

Act IV

Manon and des Grieux are again on the run, this time in Louisiana. Manon is dying from exhaustion and des Grieux leaves to find water. He returns, alone and empty-handed, to find Manon at death´s door. She swears her love to the end, and dies in his arms.
