Copenhagen, 1723, at the house of Jeronimus. A marriage has been arranged between Leander, Jeronimus´s son and Leonora, the daughter of Leonard, a family friend,. Unfortunately both Leander, who is present, and Leonora, who is not, resist the match, having fallen in love with other suitors at the previous evening´s masquerade. Jeronimus confines his family to the house.
Leander and his servant Henrik manage to escape from the house by outwitting Jeronimus´s idiotic servant Arv. Leander and Leonora meet in the street on the way to another masquerade. Unaware of each other´s identity, they fall in love with each other, while theit two servants - Henrik and Pernille - flirt.
At the masquerade Jeronimus´s wife, Magdelone, flirts with Leonard, Leander and Leonora continue their declarations of love, while a drunken Jeronimus attempts to seduce a ballerina. When the masks are remowed at midnight all is resolved to everyone´s satisfaction.
