King Creon´s daughter Glauce is to marry Jason, who stole the Golden Fleece with the help of the sorceress Medea. Medea, who has abondend her family and borne Jason two children, appears before Jason and demands his return. He rejects her, provoking a curse of revenge.
Creon banishes Medea from his city but she persuades him to allow her one more day with her children. In an act of reconciliation she gives her servant Neris two gifts to take to Glauce - a cloak and diadem, both given to her by Apollo.
Outside the Temple of Apollp, Medea embraces her children for the last time. As she does so screaming can be heard from within the palace - Glauce has been poisoned by the cloak, and the people want vengeance. Neris, Medea and her children hide in the temple, but almost immediately Neris emerges, horror-struck. Following her is Medea, carrying the blood-stained knife with which she has butchered her children. The Temple burst into flames and Medea and her Furies disappear.
