In the parlour of Madame Flora - a medium known as Baba - her daughter Monica and Toby ( a mute servant boy) are preparing for a séance. The clients for that evening are Mr and Mrs Goineau (who are regulars) and Mrs Nolan, a widow who is attending for the first time. During the séance,, Monica impersonates the spirit voices and Mrs Nolan thinks she recognizes her dead daughter´s voice. Suddenly Baba becomes hysterical when a cold hand seems to touch her throat. Suspecting Toby (who operates the trick effects), she turns out her visitors and tries to interrogate him. Monica tries to soothe her by singing.
As Toby performs a puppet play for Monica, she realizes that he loves her. Baba enters drunk and resumes her accusations of Toby. The Gobineaus and Mrs Nolan arrive expecting a séance, and are disbelieving and horrified when Baba tells them that she is in fact a fraud. She turns them and Toby out of the house. Later Toby returns to see Monica and to collect his possessions. He makes a noise - which wakes Baba - and then hides in the puppet theatre. Baba grabs a pistol and, seeing the curtain of the theatre move, shoots at it. Toby falls dead to the floor as Baba cries: I´ve killed the ghost!".
