Part 1

King Nabucco´s invading army has forced the Jews to hide inside Solomon´s temple. The high priest Zaccaria has kidnapped Nabucco´s daughter Fenena, who is entrusted to the care of Ismaele. Inknown to Zaccaria, Ismaele and Fenena are lovers, having met when Ismaele was sent to Babylon as an emissary. Another of nabucco´s daughters, the warrior Abigaille (who is also in love with Ismaele), smashes her way into the temple and offers him a chance to save his people: if he will leave with her, the jews will be spared. Nabucco then rides into the temple, at which point Zaccaria threatens to kill Fenena. Ismaele manages to save her and, as she runs to Nabucco, he and Abigaille call for the destruction of the Jews and their city. The Jews condem Ismaele.

Part II

The Jews have been taken captive to Babylon. In the city palace, which is being governed by Fenena, it emerges that Abigaille was born to slaves, not royalty, and that she has stolen the solitary document of proo. She is supported by the high priest of Baal. Who begins a rumour that Nabucco has been killed and calls for Abigaille´s coronation. In another room of the palace Zaccaria prays for wisdom and reveals that Fenena has become a Jew. Nabucco arrives and proclaims himself a god, but is struck by a thunderbolt and turned mad - whereupon Abigaille snatches the crown.

Part III

As Babylon salutes Abigaille, the high priest demands the execution of all Jews - beginning with Fenena. Nabucco, still mad, tries to reclaim the crown but is dismissed by Abigaille, who then manages to trick him into signing Fenena´s death warrant. When he realizes what he has done, Nabucco is horrified - doubly so when he sees Abigaille destroy the proof of her lowly birth. On the banks of the Euphrates, the Jews sing of their homeland. Zaccaria prophesies the fall of Babylon.

Part IV

Nabucco emerges from madness to realize that Jehovah is the one true God and, after kneeling in prayer, he calls for his warriors. Fenena and the Jews also kneel in prayer and when, after Nabucco´s arrival, the statute of Baal crumbles to dust, everyone praises Jehovah. Meanwhile, Abigaille has taken poison and, after begging her sister´s forgiveness, she dies in terror of God´s judgment.
