At a Capulet masked ball, Juliette is admired by the guests, among whom are Roméo and his Montague friends. Juliette talks of how she has no interest in marriage, but when she and Roméo meet, she realizes that their destinie are linked.
Roméo steals into Juliettes garden and eulogizes Juliette. He announces himself and, after expressing their love for each other, they decide to marry.
Frère Laurent marries the young lovers. The page Stéphano incites tension between the two families and during the ensuing fight, Roméo fatally wounds Tybalt. For the Capulet´s death, the duke of Verona banishes Roméo.
Roméo and Juliette have spent the night together. Roméo is woken by the song of a lark and, after he has left, Juliette is informed by her father that she is to marry Paris. She turns to Frère Laurent, who suggesta how she and Roméo might escape: first Juliette must take a sleeping potion that will give the impression that she has died. She drinks from the bottle and while walking up the aisle with Paris, she collapses.
Roméo has not received news of Laurent´s ruse and, believing his wife to be dead, he takes poison. As he lies dying Juliette awakes and, finding Roméo close to death, she stabs herself.
