Though the story of Salome comes from the New Testament of the Bible, the direct inspiration for Strauss´s opera comes from an 1839 French play by Oscar Wilde.Wilde expanded the shocking story of Salome, which appears briefly in the Gospels of Matthew and mark, into a full-length play, which was relatively popular at the turn of the century in both English and German translations.

In Wilde´s retelling, Salome , the daughter of King Herod´s illicit lover Herodias, is a bored young girl who idly begins to fantasiza about John the Baptist, who is being held prisoner in Herod´s dungeon. John virtuously refuses her sexual advances, and she swears revenge.

Salome performs an erotic dance, prompting Herod to promise her anything she desires. What she desirer is the head of John, presented to her on a platter, and Herod, afraid to look lika a liar in front of his guests gives to her. In the end, even Herod is disgusted by Salome´s display of triumph over John, and he has her killed.
