Syracuse, in elevth century. Aftre returning from exile in Sicily, Tancredi,in disguise, prevents Orbazzano from marrying Tancredi´s lover Amenaide. The resentful Orbazzano intercepts a letter from Amenaide to Tancredi and produces it as evidence that she is in contact with the Sarcen Solimar - the enemy of the Sicilians - and accuses her of treason. Amenaide is imprisoned, sentenced to death, rejected by Tancredi and disowned by her father, Argirio. Her only hope is the arrival of a champion who will fight for her honour.
Languishing in her cell, Armenaide determines to die with dignity and faithful to Tancredi. As Orbazzano is escorting her to the place of execution, the disguised Tancredi steps forward and challenges Orbazzano as Amenaide´s champion - even though he believes she is guilty. He is victorious and leads the Sicilians to victory in battle. The dying Solimar assures Tancredi of Armenaide´s innocence, and the opera ends in vindication and rejoicing.
